Reading is important to a child simply because of their development, and how it affects the way they learn. Reading has a strong influence on a child from infancy all the way to teenage years. Studies show that only 50% of parents read to their children. It provides for physical development also, for instance, when a child flips the pages of a book it helps with their motor skills. Sight, sound, and touch are the senses also improved by reading.
When it comes to the education of a child, parents are known as their first teachers. Not only do parents teach us by reading, they also teach us how to learn. Parents have a major effect on the child’s ability to actually be interested in learning. The child is only interested in what the parent does, for example, if the child sees the parent reading he/she will be more interested in reading.
Reading to your child will play a major role in the language development of your child as well. When children are read to they store all the sounds and pronunciations in their minds for later use. So when a child reaches the age of 2 or 3 they can put all the words they stored in their minds to use. So as you can see reading plays a major role in all of our lives, regardless of education or background, we all started off somewhere. Whether your mother read to you or not is a different story.
