Toddlers and Chores

Ever catch yourself tripping over your two year old while cleaning? Ever catch yourself yelling, "get out of the way," while doing a task? If you have a toddler than the answer is probably, "yes." Children at this age love to be, "helpers." Although, it might not seem like they are helping much, let them. Letting your toddler help with chores now will teach them how to be responsible for themselves later.

It may seem like a hassle trying to include your toddler while doing chores, but by including them not only are you teaching them responsibility, you are encouraging their self esteem, and it could make your work easier. First, know that your child will not be the neatest or most efficient worker. Pick a task that is appropriate for their age. Always give tons of positive reinforcement. For example, while dusting the house give your child a spray bottle with water and a rag. While you are dusting ask your child to clean the walls. Buy a child size vacuum, some even have sucking action and will pick up dirt. While you vacuum a room ask your child to vacuum a room. This will not only keep him/her out from under your feet, but it will also make your child feel like they are being a big helper.

There are plenty of ways to include your toddler while doing chores. Just remember it is important not to set your expectations high, they are only toddlers, and give plenty of positive reinforcement. This will help shape your child into a confident responsible adult later.
