Cooking Children

Times have changed, and children are now more self sufficient than ever. With children becoming more sufficient, we are now finding ourselves teaching our children things like nutrition, well balanced meals and cooking. It may be helpful to get your children started in the kitchen as early as 3 and 4 years old. Teaching children the importance of cooking and well balanced meals can sometimes be a little tricky. Children often times “do as they see," which means you may have to change you’re eating habits as well.

Teaching children to cook may help prevent them from eating unhealthy pre-packaged foods, which can be packed with sodium. A good place to start is teaching a child how to read a recipe and to show them the equipment needed. Showing a child, and making them understand units of measurements will also prove helpful. Teaching children to cook may not be enough, you also want to teach them to eat well balanced meals. A good tool to aid in your teaching is the Food Pyramid. The food pyramid is designed to teach you the proper food groups including: Breads, Vegetables, Fruits, Meats, Dairy products and fats.

Teaching children to cook can also be beneficial to you. With our busy lifestyles, who doesn’t need a little help in the kitchen? Children learning to cook at a young age may also help them in their adult life. A healthier lifestyle is something we all need to think about, especially in children, and you may be the one who makes the difference in their young life.
