Internet Safety For Kids

Kids are naturally curious and when alone, will enter chat rooms. Kids know right from wrong, but even knowing this, kids and teens will enter chat rooms and talk to people they do not know.

All types of people surf online and use many tricks to try to become someone you relate to. Online, it is easy for a fifty year old man or woman to become a twelve year old kid because you cannot see them. They just need to write like a kid and talk about things kids talk about. Never reveal your real name, address, or telephone listing on your profile. Remember, the predator is also reading what you type. Once the wrong person gets your real information, even your school name, they have what they need to find your location.

Never promise to meet up with someone you chat with on-line. Don't take chances because they sound nice. "Internet Predators," begin chatting friendly at first but things could get ugly later on when you actually meet them. Parents should teach children to be wise, to stay safe on the internet, and to not fall into the trap of the, "internet predator."

Parents, it is time to have that sit-down talk with your children. Don't lecture, but have a genuine conversation. Allow your kids to ask questions and you must be able to explain why the internet could get your child hurt. Monitor and know what sites your kids are going on. If necessary, bring the computer out of the bedroom. Kids are intelligent and they listen. When you are honest with them, they will respect the rules of the house.
