Busy schedules are a part of life, but balanced meals should be a part as well. Getting kids to eat a balanced meal can be challenging at times. A balanced meal is considered a meal that contains fruits, vegetables, dairy products, meats and poultry and whole grain foods. Below are a few tips on making balanced meals part of a kid's diet.
Prepare a family meal as often as possible. Studies show that family meals help kids eat healthier and perform better in school. It can also serve as a good quality time for kids and parents to spend together as a family. Use this family meal time to engage the kids in helping out during the meal preparation. Give the kids some options of the food they want to eat and how they want it prepared. This will make them feel important and not forced to eat whatever it is given to them. Avoid sweets and fat foods, no matter how much kids love them.
Use a variety of colors to make meals look more appetizing. Each color represents different nutrients. Be creative with the plate and how you present it to them. Remember that both adults and kids tend to eat with their eyes. Keep in mind that it might take a while for kids to like certain food types. Don't give up, but keep on providing them with nutritious foods.
Be an example for them and eat well yourself. Kids are very observative by nature. If you skip your veggies and fruits in a meal, you could give them the wrong message. If you eat healthy, the kids are more likely to eat healthy, too. Be careful with the portion sizes. A balanced meal consists of a controlled amount of food consumed.
