Some children develop habits that are compulsive and they seem to be unable to control them. If it is something that will not hurt them or offend anyone, then maybe you can work on rewarding them with something that they would really enjoy if they try to stop doing it.
Most of the time, they are not even aware of the fact that they are doing anything that is unnatural. A compulsive behavior can be anything from chewing fingernails to clearing their throat when there is no reason to.
The best way to deal with these kind of actions is to try not to make a big deal out of them or make the child feel different. You could tell them so that they are aware of it when they do it and that may help them to control the action. For those who have severe compulsions you may need to get them help to find out exactly why they do what they do. It is said that at least 90 percent of the population has some kind of compulsion, and they get along just fine. However, if the compulsive action is affecting their health or their body, then you must seek help. Children like this are usually worried about what people think and feel that they have to be perfect. You have to be able to make them feel secure about themselves and continue to give them praise even for little things. This may give them the sense of well being that they so desperately need.
