Some kids like to have a snack after school every single day. Some may tap their pencil on their nose when they are pondering a problem. Compulsive kids want to do the same thing over and over and over for very long periods of time. These habits begin to cause other problems for the children. They may always be frequently late for school and/or they have trouble getting assignments done on time. How can these children be helped?
Understanding what is going on with these special kids is one way to start helping them. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder comes from the way that the brain processes anxious thoughts. These anxious thoughts and the way that their brains are dealing with them makes them believe that they really need to perform these ritualistic activities. They may be so anxious about getting germs that they believe that they must constantly wash their hands. They may be so worried about their school assignment not being perfect that they feel they must redo it several times. The more that they engage in these activities, the more convinced they become that they must continue to do them. They often feel ashamed of their habits, so they need people to let them know that they are not bad kids and these habits are not their fault.
Therapy options are available for compulsive kids. Behavior therapy and talk therapy are a few treatments that are used by mental health professionals. These therapies teach the children coping mechanisms that give them other ways to deal with their anxieties besides the compulsive behaviors. There are also medications available that may be used together with the treatments. It may take a few months, or even a few years, but there is hope and help for these special children.
