Getting your children to eat healthy starts when they are very young. Take them to the grocery store and let them become involved in the food selecting process. Give them some choices between two healthy foods. They will be sure to tell the rest of the family that they chose that one.
As they mature, they should be included even more. Show them the food pyramid and how to read it. Then show them why you choose the food combination for a meal. When able, they should be allowed to help plan and prepare a healthy meal. It won't take long before the children are policing your food intake. Be a good example.
It is important that the family eats together, peacefully. Don't fight the kids over food; it only causes rebellion. A pleasant experience improves digestion as well as providing a forum to hear about their day. There should be a rule though, about tasting new foods. They don't have to eat a lot, but they must taste it.
There are charts you can buy from websites that list how many servings of certain foods are recommended on the food pyramid. The charts are write-on/wipe-off that the kids can fill out and can be erased clean for the next day.
Avoiding carbonated beverages is important also. They contain empty calories that fill the kids up, so that they forgo healthy food. Exercise is as just important as food. It helps in digestion and the psyche. With the proper amounts of food and exercise, one is destined to lead a healthy life.
