Importance of Chores For Children

Raising a child to be responsible in life and to have respect for others can begin right at home with chores. Having a few responsibilities in the home, teaches a child how to live with others. Even the youngest child can learn to have personal duties and learn self care. Keeping up with daily chores teaches the child values and what it means to work with other people. A young child can feel all grown up when sharing the chores. They develop a sense of personal responsibility in the family.

When a child starts out with little things, based on their age, they can understand the stages it takes to get a job done completely from beginning to end. If starting the child out very young, laundry can be given as a first chore, with more responsibility being added in slow progressive steps as the child grows. They may start out at age 5 just moving the laundry from the washer to the dryer, but end up, as an adult, doing the entire laundry load.

There is a lesson of discipline when a child is assigned specific chores. When you explain what you want done and when you want it done by, this is a lesson in time management. As the child gets older, they have school activities and homework that's keeping them busy. However, they still need some lighter chores that fit in to their schedule. They will learn what it means to prioritize and organize things in their lives.

As more chores are introduced over the years of the child's life, they will like taking care of someone else. They will also practice working with others, learn respect, responsibility and become a productive working adult. They will play a responsible part in helping their home run smooth.
