Teaching your children to cook is very important. With all the fast food, frozen pizza and quick meals there are out there, sometimes it is overlooked. But you want your children to be independent when they grow up and not depend on going out to eat. Going out to eat can be very expensive and sometimes unhealthy.
One thing you can do with your children is read cookbooks and magazines together. Not only will this help their cooking skills, but it will also help them read, too! You can go through magazines and pick out recipes that you want to make together. It is quite a bonding experience. Pictures are good for younger children.
You can also teach your children how to cook when you cook. You can have them help out and watch you cook. Show them measuring cups and spoons and show them how you measure the ingredients and mix them together. You can even do this when they are very young. Letting them stir the ingredients or pour them in will be very exciting for them.
When teaching children how to cook, you always want to teach them safety and cleanliness, too. Make sure they wash their hands and wash their work area. You want to make sure young children do not touch knives or the hot stove.
There are things that every child as young as three years old can help out with when cooking. They can hand you items, clean vegetables, mix ingredients, etc. The older your child gets, the more they can be involved in the cooking. But no matter how young they are, it doesn’t hurt to watch.
