One thing that parents try to teach their kids is to be independent, because some day, they will grow up and go out on their own. The last thing a parent wants to do is lose sleep at night worrying if their kids are walking around dirty and starving because their children don't know how to do laundry or cook.
When it comes to teaching children cooking, start with the basics. Have the kids wash vegetables. Teach the kids about safe food handling and the importance of good hygiene. "Clean as you go" is a great motto to train young aspiring cooks. Safety is a must when working in the kitchen. You will need to set some rules about working with knifes and other equipment that could hurt them. It would also be good for them to know about the different utensils. They will want to know what each is used for so they don't break it.
As the kids get older, teach them how to measure things out. Explain the difference between dry and wet ingredients, and how each is measured. You can also show them how to follow a recipe doing things in the right order. Plan on taking more time to fix a meal when the kids are helping you. Go slow and answer any questions they have. Start with them fixing one part of the meal. When the family sits down to eat, point out what they made it and give them a chance to feel good about themselves. This will give them the desire to want to do more cooking.
As you spend time in the kitchen with your children, you will be passing down the love of cooking. You will also get to know what is going on in their lives as you talk. This will build strong family relationships that will last a lifetime.
