How to Handle Temper Tantrums

The dreaded temper tantrums are a nightmare; children usually start having tantrums around two years of age. It is their way of communicating that they are not getting what they want, whether it is attention, food, or rest, or perhaps they are not feeling well.

Starting at a very young age is the key to managing a tantrum. If you can manage a two year old, an eight year old will be much easier. Make sure you address the tantrum head on and try to keep their routine normal; going to the store at 3 PM when they usually nap at that time is asking for trouble. Young children don’t understand waiting; when a child is hungry, they want food immediately.

Other tantrums can be caused by not getting what they want, such as in the checkout at the store or the toy aisle. Let them know prior to your outing why it is you are there and that you are not there for toys or treats. At home, when they demand something you won't give them and they throw a fit, they must be told that they cannot have what they want and they must either accept the fact or spend some quiet time in their room. Insist that they stay there until they can be calm and explain that it is not the time for what they want. If you are getting frustrated, remove yourself from the situation. Ask a spouse or friend to mind the child. Then go for a walk and take deep breaths; a calm you is better prepared to handle the problem.

When dealing with tantrums, be prepared and calm, and do not give in to the child’s wants. Things like hunger, sleep, and lack of attention should be addressed as soon as possible. Little people just don’t understand the waiting game.
