Getting Your Kids to Eat Well

Getting kids to eat healthy, balanced meals can be daunting. Sometimes, it's easier to throw a frozen pizza or some corn dogs in the oven after a long day. High fat, high sodium, highly processed foods are everywhere. They are easy, quick, and most of all, tasty, making kids enjoy and crave them. Changing these habits depend on parents. Luckily, there are ways to incorporate healthy eating into even the choosiest child's diet.

Healthy foods help kids succeed. A good, balanced diet keeps minds sharp, bodies strong, and allow kids to be awake and alert in school. It is important for parents to set a good example for kids by eating well. Don't keep junk food in the house and practice what you preach. Show kids the difference between unhealthy and healthy foods. Help them to understand what a balanced diet means. Stock the kitchen with healthy snacks including granola bars, fruit and pre-cut veggies with low fat dips. Make sure snacks are accessible and ready for them when they come home. Instead of white bread, purchase whole grain. If your child doesn’t want to drink milk, add some chocolate syrup.

Sneak healthy foods into dinners by pureeing small amounts of spinach and adding it to hamburger and casseroles. If they can't see the veggies, they often won't notice. Change how you cook as well. Balance meals with lean proteins, carbs and healthy fats. Kids can still have French fries, just bake them instead of deep frying them. Children learn from their parents, so changes in shopping and cooking will become normal for them. The good eating habits they learn under your roof will be taken into their own.
